Electric and acoustic guitar lessons

I teach electric and acoustic guitar one to one at my home in Holme on Spalding Moor, near Market Weighton. Electric is my main instrument and most of what I teach is built around it. Lessons cost £30 for an hour or £15 for half an hour, and you bring your own guitar.

How I teach guitar

Lessons follow a method I've built up over the years. It's a run of exercises and short sections from real songs, chosen for the techniques they teach. You work through them in order, building one skill on the last.

It's all taught from tab, which shows you the string and the fret to play, so there is no sheet music to learn. Theory comes in only where it helps you play. When you're ready for the more advanced scales, we'll go there.

The point of all of it is that you end up able to play the music you like, properly and on your own.

Electric guitar lessons

Electric is what I play in my band, Powersurge, and it's what I teach most. Bring your electric guitar along to the lesson.

Acoustic guitar lessons

Acoustic players get the same method and learn from the same tab. If you'd like to try both, you can.

Who comes for guitar lessons

  • Complete beginners. Most people who come to me have never played before.
  • Intermediate players.
  • Children of any age. I ask a parent to stay in the room for younger pupils.
  • Adults, at any level.

Everyone gets one-to-one lessons, so the pace is yours.

What to bring

Your own guitar, electric or acoustic. If it hasn't been restrung for a while, or it's hard to play, I can restring and set it up for £40, strings included.

Full details of lesson lengths and costs are on the prices page.

Guitar lesson questions

Do I need to read music to learn guitar?
No. Everything is taught from tab, which shows you which string and which fret to play. There is no sheet music in my lessons and you never need to learn to read it.
Should I learn electric or acoustic guitar?
Either is fine and I teach both. Electric is my main instrument and the one I teach most. Bring whichever guitar you have.
Do you teach bass guitar?
No. I teach electric guitar, acoustic guitar and drums.
Is a half-hour guitar lesson enough?
Both lengths are available. Half an hour is £15 and an hour is £30, both at my home. If you are not sure which suits you, ask me when you book.
Do you teach guitar grades or exams?
No. There are no grades and no exams. Lessons are about getting you playing properly.
What age can my child start guitar lessons?
I teach all ages. For younger children I ask a parent to stay in the room for the lesson.
